Safe House Review - 3.5 Stars
Denzel Washington begins “Safe House” closing a deal to deliver a file that will make him a mega millionaire. Suddenly a group of swarthy assassins appear with guns and fast cars and the bullets starts flying. Washington makes it to the American consul where CIA guys take him to a safe house for interrogation. That’s where Ryan Reynolds comes into the picture as a bored junior level operative looking for action to gain a promotion. Suddenly the CIA guys start water boarding Washington, the assassins burst into the safe house, bullets fly again and Reynolds makes it out with Washington in tow. “Safe House” reminds me of a lot of spy thrillers with a touch of “All the President’s Men” thrown in for good measure. The plot twists along nicely with appropriate violence and shock. The final twist adds a touch of movie appeal. In all of this I liked the chemistry between Reynolds and Washington. A good cast includes Vera Farmiga, Brendan Gleeson and Sam Shepard. Call me wacky, but I had a good time watching “Safe House.” Does it deliver what it promises? Spy thriller. Is it entertaining? Full of shocks and twists. Is it worth the price of admission? Old school thriller.
