Snow White and the Huntsman Review - 3 Stars
Charlize Theron creates one of the all time evil characters — the wicked Queen in “Snow White and the Huntsman”. She seduces Snow White’s father, the king, murders him on their wedding night, takes over the kingdom and locks Snow White in a tower. The always vulnerable but ultimately strong Kristen Stewart seems fine as Snow White, but the movie really belongs to Charlize Theron. Watching her primp and pace and suck the soul out of the kingdom’s young gave me a shiver or two. Snow White escapes just as THE Queen’s magic mirror tells her that she’ll live forever if she eat’s Snow White’s heart—-take that Hannibal Lector. So huntsman Chris Hemsworth (best known as the hunk who played “Thor”) goes after Snow White, but one look and he turns into her protector. This rich dark frightening version features seven outrageous dwarves, played by great actors including Bob Hoskins, Ian McShane, and Toby Jones. The ending feels ordinary compared to the movie’s great beginning. Even so, storytelling carries the day. Does it deliver what it promises? Not your mommie’s Snow White. Is it entertaining? Over the top evil. Is it worth the price of admission? Great fun.
