Here Comes the Broom Review - 2 Stars
The likable every guy Kevin James plays a burnt out high school science teacher who determines to find a way to save his school music program. So he enters the world of mixed martial arts, planning on losing a series of fights to raise enough money to keep the band program. Kevin, of course, endures a series of body and head blows in a variety of subpar venues. Most of the time “Here Comes the Boom” turns out gentle jokes thanks to a winning cast that includes Henry Winkler as the school band director, and Salma Hayek as the school nurse and object of Kevin’s affections. Several current and retired fighters and announcers add realism to this comedy. My favorite bit, however, involves some homemade apple sauce that sits on the dash board a little too long. “Here Comes the Boom” feels like a TV sitcom and aims for sitcom laughs, some of which are quite funny. Kevin James continues his run of nice likable guys. All in all, not great but not bad either. Does it deliver what it promises? Fish out of water comedy. Is it entertaining? Funny at times. Is it worth the price of admission? This one’s cable bound soon but you could do worse.
